‘Isla’s Inheritance’ now available for preorder

IslasInheritance-CPage-MD

In case you somehow missed me squeeeing* it all over social media like my five-year-old with a paintgun, Isla’s Inheritance is now available for preorder at Amazon.

If Amazon isn’t your thing, you can also find the book at Smashwords, where I’m told you can add it to your library and preview it, but alas not preorder it.

For the less digitally inclined, there will be a paperback available in due course. I don’t have a timeframe on that yet, unfortunately. Rest assured, when I do I’ll be squeeeing that too. And then ordering a huge box of copies so I can roll around in them fondle them smell them OKAY, YES, ALL OF THOSE THINGS!

Soon people will be reading my words, and I feel crazy excited. Also nauseous. And proud. And nauseous. Did I mention nauseous? Eep.

*What do you mean, squeee isn’t a verb?

Cass goes AWOL

Hello! Remember me? I know I disappeared for a week there; I confess, I knew I was going to be offline but I wasn’t organised enough to schedule posts (with the exception of yesterday’s) in the interim.

Coast boyThe reason I was AWOL was that our family had a gathering down the coast, which meant wrangling the five-year-old for a night away. We had a good time, though he did insist on dragging me into the surf when the water was about ten degrees celcius at best. (Google tells me that’s fifty degrees fahrenheit, if you’re wondering.) I only went in up to my knees, but it’s a miracle I still have toes left.

He’s declared he wants to learn to surf. I’m quietly having conniptions about that.

On the Monday when we got home, I had surgery. Planned surgery — it wasn’t because of frostbite or anything! My boy and I stayed with my folks for an extra night so I only got home yesterday afternoon.

I’m slowly getting better, although I am sore. Mostly I’m just glad it’s over.

Goodreads 2014 Challenge Complete

Goodreads challenge

As I did in 2013, I set my Goodreads Challenge target at 40 books. Unlike last year, I finished it in the last week rather than in December. However, I feel a bit like I cheated, because among my 40 this year are three novellas and nine childrens books (mostly by Roald Dahl). So my new goal is to get to at lest 52 books by the end of the year, so that I’ve read 40 adult or YA novels. That’s also one book a week, which is quite nice!

We’ll see how that goes!

What have you been up to in the last week?

About Cass

For another author’s cover reveal on my blog, a bio would normally go here. But since you guys already know more-or-less who I am (I assume!), here are three random facts about me:

  1. I’m not scared of spiders or snakes, but I am terrified of leeches.
  2. My childhood toy was a doll named Sarah. Sarah is also the name of Isla’s cousin. Coincidence? I think not! Yes, actually.
  3. My favourite colour is brown. Because coffee. And chocolate. And my gorgeous book cover. Wheeee!

Sign-ups for ‘Isla’s Inheritance’ cover reveal now open!

Isla’s Inheritance teaser: meet Dominic and Jack

Before I start, I wanted to let you guys know that I’m going to have a giveaway when Isla’s Inheritance gets to 50 adds on Goodreads. Only 15 to go!

I think I’ve already mentioned that I’ve been working off some of that “my book comes out this year” nervous energy by playing with Photoshop, making little teaser pictures and promos and so forth. I’ve shared this one with you already:

Isla_ouija_board

I thought to celebrate the fact that there are less than three months to go till Isla’s Inheritance hits the virtual shelves (the paperback may take a teeny bit longer; I’m not sure), I’d share another couple of pictures — these of Dominic and Jack, both of whom feature in the book’s blurb.

Dominic

Dominic was in the same year at school as Isla’s older cousin, Ryan, making him a couple of years older than her. She had a crush on him in high school, which she’s totally over. Until he kisses her at a Halloween party.

Jack

Isla meets Jack after her life takes a turn for the weird. He is very polite and proper, and has these, um, ears… (As an aside, I could stare at this picture all day. A high-res version of it is actually my desktop wallpaper right now.)

Both of these pictures have been made with legally purchased stock so they are safe to share around. You know, if you wanted to. *shuffles feet*

WOOHOO!

Not a very useful blog post title, I grant you, but I’m pretty pumped.

Because I just finished writing the first draft of the third book in the Isla’s Inheritance trilogy.

My fourth completed novel.

Holy cow.

To celebrate, here are some fireworks. (Also because it may still be the Fourth of July somewhere in America – hi, America!) I’d prefer cupcake cannons but I don’t have a picture of those.

Fireworks

WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! *spins away in excitement*

‘Isla’s Inheritance’ is on Goodreads

Even though the subject says almost everything you need to know about the matter, I feel like I should write some extra words. So, yes, my very first book baby, Isla’s Inheritance, is on Goodreads. I don’t have a cover yet (when I do I’ll be organising a reveal; yay!) but there is a blurb. And I can pat the screen and stare at it like my dogs stare at us when we’re eating dinner. You can too, if you like. I don’t mind sharing.

Isla’s Goodreads page

The way I feel right now is really best said with animated gifs. Which is a sad state of affairs for a writer, but OMG!

I feel like this!

Rapunzel

And then I think of people actually reading it — after spending money on it — and I feel like this.

Sully faint

(I also feel sick, like I might throw up. But it’s probably best if we don’t animate that.)

Anyway, if you’re a Goodreads user and you want to add Isla’s Inheritance to your To Be Read shelf, I’d love you forever. Really. With hearts and chocolates*! ❤

Beautiful People: Character Interviews – Isla Blackman

Beautiful peopleToday’s Top Ten Tuesday topic didn’t work for me, so I’ve decided to reject that reality and substitute my own. The Notebook Sisters’ Beautiful People is a new meme designed to help writers (and anyone that reads the writers’ blogs!) learn about their characters.

So here are ten questions about Isla Blackman, she of Isla’s Inheritance fame. (Fame? Just go with it.)

What is their full name and is there a story behind why they got it?

Isla Rose Blackman. Isla is a Scottish name and, although she has no Scottish heritage that she knows of, her parents met in Edinburgh. And roses were her mother’s favourite flower, or so her father told her once. Her mother died giving birth to Isla, so she doesn’t know for certain.

How old are they, and when were they born?

She is 17 at the start of Isla’s Inheritance, although her birthday is a week later. She was born almost eighteen years ago. (I originally finished the novel three years ago so it was eighteen years before that…but it’s a sliding scale till release day!)

Describe their physical appearance. (Bonus questions: 1. What is their race/nationality/ethnicity? 2. Do you have a picture of them? If so, include it!)

Isla is 5′ 4″ with brown wavy hair, usually worn in a ponytail, and brown eyes. She has pale skin and burns easily. Her father is English and her mother’s heritage is a bit of a mystery, but she’s where Isla got her looks from.

Describe your character’s personality first in one word, and then elaborate with a few sentences.

Pragmatic. Isla was raised by her father to have a sceptical, logical mind. She never really got into crystals, ghosts and incense when her cousin Sarah did. The fact she agrees to participate in a seance at all is only because Dominic wanted to, and he’s hot. 😉

What theme song(s) fit their personality and story arc?

This song is the hardest one here, because I don’t write to music, so I don’t automatically associate my characters with music. All I can think of are parts of Wake Me Up by Evanescence, except the person that song is about is coming from a much darker place than Isla is so it’s not quite perfect.

Which one of the seven deadly sins describes your character?

None of them, really; she’s a lot more complex than that. She has moments of sloth, envy, lust, wrath and pride. Not really much gluttony to speak of, although she does love her coffee. Who doesn’t?

If they were an element (fire, water, earth, air), which one would they be?

Earth.

What is their favourite word?

“Sorry!”

Who’s one person they really miss? (It could be someone who’s passed away, or someone they’re not close to anymore, or someone who’s moved away.)

Isla never met her mother, but she misses the idea of having a mother more than anything, even though her Aunt Elizabeth has been a surrogate mother, especially since Isla moved in with her aunt and two cousins when she started high school. (Her dad lives on a farm an hour out of Canberra, so it was easier for Isla to move than to commute all the time.)

What sights, sounds, and smells remind them of that person?

None, really, because she has no basis for comparison. She hasn’t even seen a picture of her mother. It wasn’t her idea to try and summon her at the seance, and afterwards she wishes it had never been suggested…

Short story: ‘Crimson’

I don’t often post short stories on here, but here’s one I wrote for The Midnight Type a few months ago, for Valentine’s Day. I don’t think it ever got shared there, and I figured Friday the Thirteenth was a suitable occasion to share it here. Because nothing says romance like Friday the Thirteenth, right?

Crimson

The sound of laughter chased Charlie into the girls’ bathroom, audible even over the thump-thump thump-thump of the pop tune blaring in the school hall.

The tiled room was empty. She skidded to a halt in front of the scuffed sink, teetering on unfamiliar heels. She’d spent six months saving for those heels, had been so proud of herself when she left her house after dinner, her parents waving goodbye with relieved smiles.

Charlie wasn’t proud anymore.

She turned the tap on with a savage twist and splashed cold water onto burning cheeks. When she looked in the mirror, droplets of water glittered like the tears aching in the back of her eyes would if she let them fall.

Her cheeks were the same crimson as her dress.

Voices approached the bathroom door. Biting her lip, Charlie ducked into a cubicle just as the outer door swung open.

“Someone left a tap on,” a voice said in tones of great disgust. Monica. “Honestly, people are so stupid. Don’t they know about the drought? What will the cows drink if we waste all the water?”

“Honestly,” another voice parroted. Monica’s offsider, Fiona.

Clicking heels—sounding much more stable than Charlie’s had—made their way over to the sink. The tap was turned off, and then there was the sound of a zip. A purse being opened.

Biting back a sigh, Charlie eased herself down onto the closed lid of the toilet and leaned her hot face on the cool wall of the cubicle, nose against the graffiti scribbles. If Monica was doing her makeup, it could take a while.

“Guess what I heard?” Fiona said, voice quivering with barely contained excitement.

“Uhh?” An open-mouthed reply.

Definitely doing her makeup. Charlie rolled her eyes, distracted for a moment by her contempt for the popular girls.

The popular girls she’d hoped she might join tonight. She swallowed hard past the lump in her throat. Her hands began twisting in the hem of her skirt, as though they had a mind of their own. Wringing the fabric like it was someone’s throat.

“Tyler invited Charlie to the dance.”

Twisting hands froze, tangled in fabric.

Charlie held her breath, clearly hearing a plastic compact snick closed.

“I heard. But you know why, right?” Monica’s voice also quivered, hers with glee. “So he could show her up in front of all his mates.”

“No way!”

“Uh huh. I heard them chanting ‘Charlotte the Harlot, dressed in scarlet’ just before I came in here. Why else would he ask her out, anyway?”

“Why else?” Fiona agreed.

The ringing in Charlie’s ears drowned out the rest of the girls’ conversation. Her mind dragged her back to the scene, still raw and bleeding in her memory. Tyler’s friends turning on her when she entered, looking for him across the crowded room. She’d thought he might defend her. He looked uncomfortable.

Surely he would defend her.

But he didn’t, and she’d fled—and if he hadn’t intended to set her up, wouldn’t he have defended her?

Wouldn’t he have picked her up at her house, met her parents, rather than suggesting she meet him at the school?

The slapping, slithering sound of leather on leather was louder than the ringing in her ears. Because it was in her mind. Goosebumps prickled along her arms: her blood had turned to ice, freezing her from the inside out.

“Let me deal with them for you.” A deep baritone. She’d heard it before.

“No,” she replied in a whisper, not knowing—or caring—whether Monica and Fiona were still in the bathroom. She stared down at her hands. They still clutched the crimson fabric. It wound around her white knuckles as though she might fall if she let go. Fall forever. “You can’t.”

“No, you can’t,” the voice replied, soft with concern. The sort of concern she’d wished for from Tyler, only minutes before. Then the voice hardened. “But I can.”

“What will you do?”

“What is necessary.” Her hands unclenched, smoothing the crumpled fabric mechanically. “Sleep now.”

And she did. As she always did.

***

When Charlie came back to herself, she was walking home, striding confidently in those hated new heels. Her hair reeked of smoke—not cigarette smoke but the heavy, greasy smoke of a house fire.

She slipped back into her body like a hand into a glove still warm from another’s use. Her steps stumbled, ankle twisting, and she caught herself on a light pole.

Her hands, splayed against the cool metal, were wound around with crimson. Not fabric, this time.

“What have you done?” she gasped.

“What was necessary,” the baritone voice replied with satisfaction. “I love you. Happy Valentine’s Day.”

Charlie began to weep.
